FACTS
Conquering The Endo Dis-Ease!
What is Endometriosis?
NOUN: A condition, usually resulting in pain and dysmenorrhea, that is characterized by the abnormal occurrence of functional endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
![]()
Endometriosis occurs when tissue like that which lines the uterus (tissue called the endometrium) is found outside the uterus -- usually in the abdomen on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and ligaments that support the uterus; the area between the vagina and rectum; the outer surface of the uterus; and the lining of the pelvic cavity. Other sites for these endometrial growths may include the bladder, bowel, vagina, cervix, vulva, and in abdominal surgical scars. Less commonly they are found in the lung, arm, thigh, and other locations.
The causes for endometriosis are still being studied. Though exact causes have not been identified, a few theories include, hereditary genes, stress & pollution, to name some. The most discussed possible cause being reflux menstruation / retrograde menstruation, which causes blood cysts to be formed outside the uterus.
However, the latest theory being a possible type of birth defect. During fetal development, endometrial cells end up in places they do not belong (outside the female reproductive organs), where they become embedded and grow, & over time the tissue begins to change into the lesions known as endometriosis, probably at least in part in response to stimulation from sex hormones.The causes of endometriosis may not be fully understood, however, the theories available seem to logically fit. It may be that all these factors work in conjunction with one another in some way or that one of these causes stands alone. Only time, solid research, and the evolution of medical understanding will provide the answers scientists so desperately seek.
What are some of the Symptoms of Endometriosis?
* Pain before and during periods
* Pain with sex
* Infertility
* Fatigue
* Painful urination during periods
* Painful bowel movements / irritable bowel syndrome
* Other Gastrointestinal upsets such as diarrhea, constipation, nausea.In addition, many women with endometriosis suffer from:
* Allergies
* Chemical sensitivities
* Frequent yeast infectionsAs you can see, many women suffer from one or more of the above symptoms, in general. There are many tests available to rule out Endometriosis. Though Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultra-sound Scan, Bio-chemical Marker tests have helped detect the condition, diagnosis is considered uncertain until proven by laparoscopy, a minor surgical procedure done under anesthesia. This test is conducted by creating a small incision into the pelvic region. A tiny camera is then fed into the hole and doctors can watch the findings on a computer monitor. On the tip of the camera there is an equally tiny apparatus for collecting tissue. A tissue sample can be obtained in this way and analyzed to see if endometriosis has developed.
A laparoscopy usually shows the location, size, and extent of the growths. This helps the doctor and patient make better treatment choices. These tests are highly effective in helping doctors to determine whether endometriosis is the correct diagnosis or whether there is another cause for the symptoms. Before undergoing any tests it is a good idea that you familiarize yourself with each one of them. It is important to understand what you are getting into before you undergo any medical procedure. Also, do the necessary research to identify qualified medical professionals to treat your condition, so as to avoid complications during procedures.
There has been NO proven cure for Endometriosis. However, Treatments to cope effectively with this condition, include Surgical procedures, oral medications, hormone therapy, etc.
There are also other holistic pain-relief options, that has proven very effective, including Reiki Healing, Breathworks, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), Ether Healing Through MindEnReach, massage treatments, Accupunture / TCM treatments, Naturopathy, Special Diet Programs, etc.
Relapse is usually common after procedures, which takes anywhere from 1year to 6 years to happen. Even hysterectomy is not known to 'cure' this condition completely.
